Mapua, Motueka, Moutere

With a population of about 13 500, the Tasman district is the second fastest growing in New Zealand.  The district includes Mapua, Moteuka, Moutere and other smaller surrounding townships, and can be accessed via the Coastal Highway.
The district is primarily a horticultural region.

Between Richmond and Mouteka lies the region’s most fertile land, where export crops of apples, berries and olives are grown.  The area also produces grapes and vineyards, and New Zealand’s entire hops crop (used for beer) is grown in the Riwaka and Mouteka Valleys.

Fine dining, fresh seafood, quality wines and quirky art are the trademarks of this region.

Mouteka is the largest township (although not as large as Richmond), while Mapua is a charming seaside settlement with cafes on the waterfront, and Moutere is a lush, green small town.  While you’re in the area, be sure to cruise the Waimea Estuary (the largest estuary on the South Island) by boat or kayak.  Rabbit Island, with its sandy beaches and safe swimming areas, is also worth a look.
